Sarah McLachlan

Sarah was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1968. Her earlier years were devoted to studying the classical piano, guitar, and voice. Not only is she a gifted musician, she is also a gifted composer. sarah2.jpgMcLachlan wrote 6 out of the 10 tracks on this CD, and co-wrote the rest. In 1985 at the age of 19 she was dicovered by the Vancouver based recording company 'Nettwerk Records'. Nettwerk overlooked the fact that she had never written a song on her own yet, they took a gamble and the pay off was big! Her first album "Touch" (1988) went Gold in Canada, and ever since she hasn't stopped making hit albums. Fans are drawn to her dark, mystical music. In 1994 many devoted fans took to her album 'Fumbling Towards Ecstasy', this album caused Sarah's American breakthrough, which people felt was inevitable. This breakthrough brought Sarah's success to a whole new level: she was playing in the big-leagues now. This album sold five million copies, and the fans keep asking for more! But for her latest album 'Surfacing' Mclachlan reaches deeper than usual into her own dark side. McLachlan feels that there is a beauty and realism in being sad, and here fans haven't complained. Within the first week of sales 'Surfacing' was the #1 album in Canada, and it has taken the #2 spot on the American charts. The recording of the album spanned an eight month period. SarMc12.jpgShe admitted to having writers block, and took eight months to herself. "It's a lie to do it if you can't enjoy it and I just can't fake it. That's the worst travesty in the worled." MacLachlan says, showing her genuine love of the trade. Fans will be far from dissapointed upon the release of 'Surfacing' because it contains the same familiar qualities which made her earlier albums a hit. Who can forget the other members which play a role in Sarah's success. Returning members include drummer (and Sarah's new husband) Ashwin Sood, Brian Minato on bass and guitar, and producer Pierre Marchand on keyboards and bass. Jim Creeggan who you might remember from 'The Barenaked Ladies' adds his talents on the upright bass.

On July 5th she began touring with Lilith Fair, which she created herself. The fair highlights female singers like Shawn Colvin, Tracy Chapman, Suzanee Vega, Indigo Girls, Jewel and more. The Fair ended in at a sold out show in Vancouver, the tour was a huge success. To me the most memorable track on this CD is the song 'Angel' which she wrote herself. This song (written in 3 hours) is about all of the musicians who have died of heroine overdoses. She captures the sadness and serenity of their lives beatifully in this song.
